What Matters?
Education Matters
I believe that everyone should have access to quality education. Education is necessary for becoming responsible and engaged citizens , and that all starts with our children. I believe in public schools and that education isn’t “one size fits all.” Educational options should be available to every child in the Glendale Elementary School District in the form of magnet programs, after school clubs, and other ways to support all educational interests and needs. Instead of watching great students leave our district for charter schools or other districts, we need to be the schools that are offering the options that they seek.
Schools Matter (to everyone!)
Local schools are the life blood of a community. Schools affect all community members, not simply those with children. Great schools create desirable real estate and attract businesses. When that happens, everyone benefits. As it is now, we are losing many great students to other districts because we aren’t providing them with the quality and options that they are finding in other districts.
I think it is well within our grasp to have excelling schools and to become an attractive district to familes.
Teachers Matter
GESD has some pretty great teachers. My kids have had some amazing teachers over the years. School teachers have chosen a a very altruistic profession that requires not just their time, but their selves. Teachers make that sacrifice and are among the heroes of our society. I think the teachers in our district deserve to be listened to and supported so that they can do their jobs well.
Families Matter
Families are probably the most important factor affecting a childs education. In the Glendale Elementary School District we have a uniquely diverse spectrum of families and needs. I feel it is important to continue to offer support to parents and families so that they can in turn support their children in their education.
Communication Matters
We need to provide a free and open conduit of communication with our administrators, our teachers, and our families. It is essential to have board members that are loyal to the democratic process and determined to be respectful and fair. We need to listen to each other, respect each others’ positions, and be willing to compromise. We can have great ideas, but they won’t happen unless we are dynamic, respectful, open, and cooperative.
KIDS MATTER!
The first loyalty of any school district must be to the children. The district is in place to serve them, rather than serving the self interests of those in charge. We owe it to all the children in the district to meet their educational needs and to provide them with the best education possible. When making decisions and discussing goals, the first question should be, “Is this what is best for the kids?”
